Pest Guide: Flies

European Crane Fly

(Tipula palidosa)

The European Crane Fly is a common pest to lawns in Western Washington. The larvae (nicknamed ‘leatherjackets’) live in the soil and feed on the crowns of our lawn grasses. The presence of some crane fly larvae in the lawn is not an issue, however, a large population can destroy a lawn.

Fruit Flies

(Drosophila species)

Fruit flies feed on decaying fruits and vegetables.

House Flies

(Musca domestica)

House flies get their name from being the most common fly found around homes. Adult house flies can grow to one-quarter of an inch long and usually live between 15 and 25 days.
